Samādhi

Named for the Sanskrit word for deep, absorbed stillness — a fitting name for a dog who shares a house with a clinical herbalist. Every pet-wellness formulation on this page has been lived with by Samādhi first. Thunderstorms, vet visits, new company, quiet afternoons — if an essence doesn't earn its place in her water bowl, it doesn't earn a spot on the shelf.

Samādhi keeps us honest. The formulations below are the ones that actually help a real dog — not theoretical ones.

What flower essences are — and why pets respond to them

Dr. Edward Bach, an English physician, developed the original 38 flower essences in the 1930s on the premise that emotional imbalance underlies most physical unease. Flower essences are not herbal extracts, and they are not essential oils — they contain no plant matter and no fragrance. Instead, a flower is infused in pure spring water under sunlight, and the imprinted water is then preserved in brandy so the medicine stays shelf-stable and fully potent for years. This alcohol-preservation method is the clinical standard for high-grade plant medicine; glycerin alternatives trade shelf life and potency for mildness.

Animals respond to flower essences remarkably well. They don't have the intellectual skepticism that complicates human trials — they either relax, or they don't. Holistic veterinarians have used them alongside conventional treatment since the 1940s for stress-related behaviors: the rescue dog who won't eat, the cat who sprays during a household upheaval, the thunder-phobic retriever, the two brothers who can't share a water bowl.

Flower essences are not sedatives. They don't make your pet groggy. They don't blunt pain or suppress behavior. They support the emotional state underneath the behavior — and the behavior often shifts because the pet is no longer stuck in fight-or-flight.

Match the moment

What to reach for, when

Thunderstorms, fireworks & loud noises

Pets that tremble, hide, or pant at the first rumble often don't understand the source of the sound. Tranquility essence works gently on the anxious heart before and during the storm — no sedation, no next-day grogginess.

Separation anxiety

Dogs who can't be left alone — pacing, whining, chewing the door — are grieving the temporary loss of their person. Pair Heartful (the rose essence for heart-healing and secure bonding) with Tranquility for acute episodes.

Rescue pets adjusting to a new home

A newly-adopted animal carries a lot: old trauma, unfamiliar smells, new rules, a new pack. Heartful opens the door to trust; Confidence helps a timid dog hold her own space; Tranquility takes the edge off the overwhelming novelty.

Vet visits, travel & grooming

The car ride, the exam table, the clippers. Tranquility given 15–30 minutes before — and another dose on arrival — helps the anxious body settle without dulling the animal.

Multi-pet household tension

In a house with multiple personalities, friction is normal — but relentless friction isn't. Confidence supports the under-dog who keeps getting pushed aside; Tranquility softens the tightly-wound dominant animal. Offer in each pet's own water bowl for daily maintenance.

Grief & loss (of a companion or person)

Animals mourn. A dog who stops eating after his housemate passes, a cat who searches every room — their grief is real. Heartful is the essence for open-hearted grieving, and Vitality helps re-spark interest in the world when the time is right.

Senior pets: confusion, slowing down, low spirits

Older animals sometimes lose their sharpness — standing in corners, forgetting familiar people, sleeping more deeply than they used to. Clarity gently supports present-moment focus; Vitality offers renewed lightness when the spark has dimmed.

Training & focus

A dog whose mind won't settle can't learn. Clarity helps pets stay engaged and present during training sessions — especially useful for puppies or high-drive breeds who struggle to focus.

Recovery from illness or surgery

The body heals faster when the spirit is cared for. Vitality brings gentle lightness and joy back to a pet in convalescence; Heartful supports the emotional weight of being unwell. Always in addition to — never instead of — your vet's care plan.

How to give a flower essence to your pet

Standard dose

Four drops, once or twice a day, for most pets. Size of the animal does not change the dose — these work on the emotional level, not by weight-based pharmacology.

Loading dose (first three days)

Four drops, two to three times daily, for the first three days. This helps the essence settle into the pet's system faster. After that, drop back to once or twice daily maintenance.

Acute situations

For an active thunderstorm, post-surgery distress, or a sudden crisis, drops can be repeated every 10–15 minutes for short periods. Return to the normal schedule once things settle.

Six ways to administer

  1. Directly into the mouth (most dogs)
  2. In the water bowl — works especially well for cats and multi-pet households
  3. On a treat or on food
  4. Rubbed onto the ears
  5. On the paw pads — the pet licks it off
  6. Misted on bedding or in a travel crate

Consistency matters more than the exact dose. A daily routine of four drops in the water bowl will outperform sporadic larger doses.

On brandy preservation & pet safety

Our essences are preserved in organic brandy and pure mountain water — the same method Dr. Bach developed and the same method used by clinical herbalists making high-grade plant medicine today. Alcohol preservation is what keeps each bottle shelf-stable and fully potent for years without the degradation that softer preservatives allow.

A single dose contains only a trace of preservative. The Bach Centre, the original institution carrying on Dr. Bach's work, describes the amount of alcohol in four drops diluted into a water bowl as "barely measurable" — there is no record of harm to a companion animal from properly dosed flower essences, in the 90 years they have been given to pets.

For very small dogs, cats sensitive to brandy's scent, kittens, or pocket pets, we recommend diluting drops into the water bowl, mixing into food, or applying topically onto the paw pads or ears rather than dosing directly into the mouth. Speak with your veterinarian if your animal is pregnant, nursing, on medications, or has liver/kidney disease, before starting any new remedy.

These statements have not been evaluated by the Food and Drug Administration. Flower essences are not intended to diagnose, treat, cure, or prevent any disease, and they are not a substitute for veterinary care.

Frequently asked

Are flower essences safe for pets?

Flower essences have been used with companion animals for over 90 years, since Dr. Edward Bach's original formulations in the 1930s, and have a long safety record. They are not sedatives and do not affect pets chemically — they work on the emotional/energetic level. As with any supplement, consult your veterinarian if your pet is pregnant, nursing, has liver or kidney disease, or is on medications.

Why are your essences preserved in brandy instead of glycerin?

Brandy and pure water is the traditional preservation method Dr. Bach himself used, and it remains the clinical standard for high-grade plant medicine. Alcohol preservation keeps the medicine shelf-stable and fully potent for years without breaking down. Glycerin-preserved pet formulas are a softer compromise that does not match the original method. Each dose contains only a trace of brandy — the Bach Centre describes the amount in a drop as "barely measurable." For small or highly sensitive pets, we recommend adding drops to a water bowl, food, or applying directly onto the paws or ears rather than dosing into the mouth.

How do I give a flower essence to my dog or cat?

There are six safe ways to dose: (1) four drops directly into the mouth, (2) drops in the water bowl, (3) drops on a favorite treat or food, (4) a few drops rubbed onto the ears, (5) drops on the paw pads for the pet to lick off, or (6) drops misted on bedding. Cats can be sensitive to the smell of brandy — for cats, the water-bowl or food method is usually easiest. Consistency matters more than the exact dose.

What's the standard dosing?

Four drops, once or twice daily, is the maintenance dose for most pets. For the first three days of use, give four drops two to three times daily — this is the loading phase. In acute situations (active thunderstorm, distress, seizure recovery), doses can be repeated every 10–15 minutes for short periods.

How long before I see a difference?

Some pets respond within hours, especially for acute stress like a thunderstorm. For ongoing issues — rescue-pet adjustment, grief, household tension — effects usually unfold over 2–4 weeks of consistent daily use. Flower essences work gently. Dramatic overnight changes are uncommon; subtle shifts in posture, appetite, eye softness, and behavior are what to watch for.

Can I use flower essences alongside my pet's medications?

Flower essences are considered low-risk and non-reactive with most conventional medications, including anxiety medications, pain management, and heartworm preventives. They work on a different level than pharmaceuticals, so they do not interact chemically. That said, always inform your veterinarian of every supplement and natural remedy your pet receives.

Will my pet get drowsy or sedated?

No. Flower essences are fundamentally different from sedatives like trazodone or acepromazine. They support emotional balance without affecting alertness, coordination, or the central nervous system. Your pet stays fully present — just less gripped by the anxiety.

Can I give flower essences to a puppy or kitten?

Yes, flower essences are suitable for young animals. For the smallest ones, use the water-bowl or topical-on-paw method rather than direct oral dosing. Many new-puppy and new-kitten owners use Tranquility to support the first nights in a new home.

How is this different from Bach's Rescue Remedy?

Bach's Rescue Remedy is a commercial five-essence blend made at enormous scale. Our essences are made by a single clinical herbalist in small batches from organically grown or ethically wildcrafted flowers in our Arkansas garden, using the traditional Bach preservation method. You're buying the closest thing to a made-in-your-town, made-with-intent, made-for-you bottle — not a mass-market product.

Which essence should I start with?

If you're new to flower essences and your pet is anxious, start with Tranquility — it's our most-used essence for animals. If the issue is grief, recent loss, or a rescue dog's heart-armor, start with Heartful. For a shy or submissive dog, start with Confidence. Trust your read of the animal — these essences work with the emotional state, not the diagnosis.

How long does one bottle last?

A 1 fl oz (30 mL) bottle contains roughly 600 drops. At the maintenance dose of four drops once daily, a single bottle lasts about five months — even longer for multi-pet households splitting drops between water bowls.

Do the essences have a smell or flavor?

Very little. The essence itself is flavorless. The brandy preservation carries a faint warmth that some cats will notice in a direct-to-mouth dose. Diluted in water or on food, it's undetectable to most pets.
